Lanie Lee: Artist's Statement

I use calligraphic markings and pictographs to investigate intuitive language. My recent works are gouache and ink on paper. Working within a grid system, I randomly brush calligraphic marks and collage fragments of paper. The organic nature of the lines evolves into biomorphic images and everyday objects. An endless flow of patterns develop. A piece may have 4 to 6 panels to create a picto-scroll.

In “Unedited Library” (a public art installation of 144 books that was shown at Washington Square Windows) I used discarded books to create pictograms. It is an ongoing exploration of the connection between nature and language.
