Pamela Casper: Artist's Statement
At the end of 2007 in a response to my mounting concern for global environmental issues, my subject matter shifted away from direct observation of nature to a mixture of direct and imaginary visualizations of nature’s forces.
These imaginary forces manifested in a series of Tornado paintings which depict a whirlwind randomly sweeping up debris and plants. The destructive force and randomness of this natural phenomenon embodies my feelings of awe and helplessness toward the natural world. In all of the Tornado images I have placed a cluster of flowers at the core of the whirlwind which symbolize the combined perfection of beauty and the mechanics of reproduction as well as a sense of optimism. Each Tornado alludes to a dilemma which confronts mankind today; such as the safe disposal of non-biodegradable waste, the dwindling numbers of native Bees and the effects of pesticides upon the environment.
In these water color paintings I juxtapose two painting techniques; a loose accidental method and a controlled technique, metaphors for the ordered and chaotic forces of our universe.
